Iso-Liukko Pirtti is around 300 years old and it has lasted through wars and hard times. It has been used over centuries as the town`s main building and meeting point. It has served as a leisure destination over the summer period for many years. However, most importantly it has been the home of the Wanha Liukko family. The family has resided here since the early 18th century.
There is a age old story associated with Liukko Pirtti of a bear hunter by the name of Martti Kitunen. The hunter was informed that the town had plenty of bears, but no hunters. Kitunen became a legendary figure in the area for his successful hunts and was seen as a hunting phenom. In 1867, a Danish scientist by the name of Vilhelm Thomsen lived on the premises. He learnt the Finnish language and studied materials for his famous publications.
